Abstract

Abstract: Arabic language learning requires pedagogical strategies that are able to enhance students’ reading skills (maharah qirā’ah) while simultaneously fostering active and meaningful learning motivation. One approach considered relevant to addressing this need is the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, which emphasizes authentic problem-solving, collaboration, and active student engagement. This study evaluates the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the maharah qirā’ah abilities of eighth-grade students at MTs Mu'allimin Mu'allimat Sunan Drajat. The study was motivated by students’ low reading proficiency and limited motivation in learning Arabic. Employing a quantitative approach with a One-Group Pretest–Posttest design, the study involved 30 students selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments included reading tests, observation sheets, interviews, and documentation; data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests and descriptive qualitative analysis. Quantitative results showed a significant increase in mean scores from 64.3 in the pretest to 81.6 in the posttest (p = 0.000), indicating the effectiveness of PBL. Qualitative findings revealed improvements in students’ motivation, active participation, enthusiasm for loud reading, and a shift in learning attitudes from passive to proactive. The discussion highlights that authentic problem-solving contexts and group collaboration enhance comprehension and reading skills. It is concluded that the implementation of PBL effectively improves students’ maharah qirā’ah and learning motivation; therefore, it is recommended as a learning strategy in similar contexts. The study also recommends teacher training for effective PBL implementation and further research using controlled designs to strengthen the generalizability of the findings.
