The teaching of Arabic grammar (nahwu) in madrasahs and Islamic boarding schools has traditionally emphasized the memorization of Nadzam Alfiyah Ibn Malik as a foundational means of mastering Arabic grammatical rules. This memorization practice is believed not merely to involve mechanical recall, but also to support students’ understanding and reasoning of qawāʿid al-nahwiyyah. However, empirical evidence regarding the relationship between mastery of Nadzam Alfiyah memorization and students’ understanding of Arabic grammar remains limited and requires systematic investigation. Therefore, this study aims to examine the correlation between mastery of memorizing Nadzam Alfiyah Ibn Malik and students’ understanding of qawāʿid al-nahwiyyah among fourth-grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Muallimin Muallimat Sunan Drajat. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 30 students selected through purposive sampling. Data on memorization mastery were obtained from documentation of students’ memorization records, while data on understanding grammatical rules were collected through a written test. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation. The findings indicate that both mastery of Nadzam Alfiyah memorization and students’ understanding of qawāʿid al-nahwiyyah were categorized as very good. The correlation analysis revealed a positive and significant relationship between the two variables, with a correlation coefficient of 0.519. These results suggest that memorization of Nadzam Alfiyah contributes to enhancing students’ understanding of Arabic grammatical rules, although learning outcomes are also influenced by other instructional factors.
