Abstract

The problems in the world of education in Indonesia today are not only related to low academic achievement, but also the weak character formation of students. The purpose of this study is to determine: (1) the democratic values ​​developed by students; (2) the learning strategies for democratic attitudes applied; and (3) the factors that become obstacles in the process of learning democratic attitudes in the school. This study was conducted at SMAN 1 Paciran, Lamongan using a qualitative approach. Data were obtained through interview, observation, and documentation methods. The data analysis used in this study was interactive data analysis with three main components, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions and verification. The results obtained were that: (1) the democratic attitudes developed by students are based on the values ​​of openness, equality, and cooperation based on mutual respect; (2) the learning strategies for democratic attitudes are implemented by creating a democratic learning situation, encouraging creative and open thinking, and fostering courage in expressing opinions. The implementation of learning strategies is carried out through contextual approaches, inquiry, and cooperative learning; and (3) obstacles in learning democratic attitudes include teachers and school principals not being ready to implement changes in learning that emphasize democratic values, limited facilities and infrastructure, and a lack of support from families and the community in introducing democratic values.
